Water Softener Salt Tablets vs Block Salt

Short answer

Tablets and blocks are both salt for regenerating a water softener's resin. The right one is the format your softener is designed to use — many softeners take tablets, while some models are built specifically for blocks. Check your softener's manual or manufacturer if you are unsure.

What is the difference?

Tablet salt is compressed salt in small tablets, poured loose into the softener's salt or brine tank. Block salt is salt pressed into solid blocks, placed into softeners designed to hold blocks.

Both do the same job: dissolving into brine that the softener uses to regenerate its resin. The main difference is which format your softener has been designed for.

How to choose

  • Check your manual or manufacturer. This is the most reliable guide to the right salt format.
  • Look at what you currently use. If your softener runs well on its current format, stay with it.
  • Consider handling. Tablets come in larger bags, such as 25kg, or lighter 10kg Easy-Fill bags. Blocks come in 8kg packs.
